"Dissenting Hearts" Mixed Media on Canvas, Original, - 20" x 16" by Karen Clarkson

With interactive QR codes. Celebrating the life of Ruth Bader Ginsburg and her courage to uphold women's equality, this piece shows a strong Indigenous woman bearing her heart "on her sleeve."  The headdress is the infamous Dissent Collar, often used by RBG.

This art is painted on wood with added collage using pieces of Clarkson's original painting "Culture."  It has been framed in a shadow box and painted inside with a maroon border.  The two scan codes on either side of the headdress will show the viewer information on indigenous women of political power in today's world.  All you need do it point your smart phone's camera on them or use a scan app on your phone.

Karen Clarkson

Choctaw

Artist Karen Clarkson is drawn towards the human form in all its strength and beauty. Some of her earliest memories of childhood are of drawing people. "I remember when I was in fourth grade and drew a picture of my teacher which I thought looked exactly like her," says Clarkson. "Imagine my dismay when I had to stay after school as punishment."

Although many of Clarkson's works are of Native Americans, she also creates landscapes and still life, as well as portraits in other mediums. Being self-taught has encouraged her to experiment, though she keeps coming back to the human form. "Maybe someday my teacher will read this and decide she really does want me to draw her portrait!"

Nowadays Clarkson lives in Prescott, Arizona with her husband and their two, little dogs. "There are so many fascinating subjects to draw – I can’t wait to get to them all!"
