Roberto Veliz has been a resident of Santa Fe for the last 17 years. He divides his time between managing his graphics and sign business (his vintage wood signs appear around the city), singing and playing guitar to the music of his native Cuba and painting landscapes of New Mexico.
Last year, for the first time, he began displaying his paintings to the public, though he has been drawing and painting since childhood.
“I admire the western art of Maynard Dixon and Ernest Blumenschein, a founder of the Taos 7, in particular. I have picked up ideas from these artists’ styles, though I am not trying to emulate them. I really do not believe in naming art movements or styles. All art work should be respected and admired, without being too descriptive.
I have been a welcome desk volunteer at the Georgia O'Keefe Museum in Santa Fe for the past 3 years, during which time I have had the opportunity to study the paintings of Ms. O'Keefe with great interest. I have developed a great admiration and respect for the art and private life of Ms.O'Keefe, her use of vivid colors, the unwavering feathery touch of her brush, and above all, her courage to create such stylized depictions of the landscape at the time in which her great art was produced."
I believe the use of strong and vibrant colors make for happier paintings. I like to make people feel happy while enjoying what I create. I find that the landscapes and the light of New Mexico, and the west in general, are very appropriate for the creation of vibrant, uplifting paintings.”
