True West, Santa Fe Presents:  Joseph Medina

Joseph Medina resides and creates in Bovina, NY. He received a fine art degree from the Fashion Institute of Technology in 2000 as well as a certificate in precision machining from the National Tooling and Machining Association in 1992. Joseph has studied and worked professionally as a painter, precision machinist, model maker, ceramicist and sculptor. After college he entered a career in props and model making, most notably with Rodney Gordon Millinery. There he was contracted to sculpt character masks, headdresses, and anything that required custom creation. He sculpted for Phantom of the Opera, Lion King, Wicked, San Francisco Ballet Nutcracker, Radio City, The Rockettes, as well as Disney and Broadway productions.

I get most of my inspiration from animals and the natural world. I gather inspiration from my travels as well. About five years ago I decided to fulfill a lifelong dream of prospecting for gold in the Rockies. The five trips I’ve taken since then always start out the same – a mad, feverish race against time to prepare for a cross country gold mining tour, and then digging a ridiculous amount of sand and gravel and cobble stones and boulders. The trips end up becoming epic voyages of adventure and discovery…with a golden lining.

My most recent trip started the same as the ones before but, after finding little gold, became the fulfillment of another dream – to be a full time artist. I can finally dedicate my full attention to the evolution of my work and the honoring of Mother Nature.
