Kevin Garcia
Turquoise Jeweler
Kevin Ray Garcia, hailing from the Santo Domingo Pueblo, carries on the tradition of his family's jewelry making legacy, specializing in handmade heishi beads crafted from turquoise, seashell, and other natural stones. Learning the art of heishi making from his mother and acquiring various techniques from his brother, Garcia's process involves meticulous handcrafting, from cutting the stones with a lapidary saw and wire nipper to drilling each piece with a dremel drill. His expertise extends to shaping and polishing the beads, culminating in a two-step buffing polish and finishing with sterling silver findings. Inspired by the natural shape of the stones, Garcia aims to preserve their original form in his jewelry pieces, particularly favoring green/blue turquoise varieties like Bisbee, Blue Gem, and Carico Lake. Rooted in the ancestral Puebloan tradition of stone and shell work, Garcia's artistry embodies the beauty and craftsmanship of Santo Domingo Pueblo, instilling joy in both himself and his buyers, who enable him to share his art and support his family.
